SETTING UP YOUR SLOWFLOWERS.COM LISTING

Here are a few things you might want to gather together before you begin.

*****We strongly suggest that you first write the Description and other text in your word processing program and keep it as a master document. Then, you can paste it into the Slowflowers.com text fields to avoid losing information if something goes wrong.

When copying and pasting text from Word or another word processing program, use the “Paste from Word” button in the Slow Flowers text-input area (this removes extra formatting; it's the icon near the middle that has a small "W" on it). Click on "Submit" (see button at the bottom of the page) when complete to ensure your content is updated.*****

  • A short “summary description,” up to 250 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
  • A longer business description, up to 400 words.
  • Links to your company's web site or blog, or any other site where your flowers can be found, such as a CSA, farmers' market or pop-up shop.
  • A list of services you provide.
  • Your business logo and up to 5 additional photographs, including a photograph of you, your shop, and/or photographs of your design work. All images should be no larger than 1.5 MB. The FIRST image you upload should be the logo as this will be inserted in the text box.
  • A list of up to 10 keywords that best describe your areas of expertise, or that best describe your topics as people might search for them.  (Think about this from the perspective of the person doing the searching.) Each keyword or phrase must be less than 50 characters long, including punctuation and spaces.

OK, I'm ready to go!  What's first?

Click "Create a Listing" (you will find this link at the top of the home page). You'll come to the LISTING OPTIONS Page.

Create a Listing

Select whether you want the STANDARD Listing for $5/month or the PREMIUM Listing for $20 per month by clicking on the “SIGN UP” button.

Now you're on a page that will let you start building your listing:

For a STANDARD Listing, please follow these instructions:

1. Listing TITLE – this is the name of your business.

2. Select Two CATEGORIES (you can purchase additional categories for $2 each per month)

Choose up to five categories that best represent your business. (Click "Add" next to the categories you choose.)  You can make changes to this later. Click the "Continue" button to move to Step 4.

3. By submitting this page, you are Accepting the SLOWFLOWERS.COM Service "Pledge."

For a PREMIUM Listing, please follow these instructions:

1. Listing TITLE – this is the name of your business.

2. Select up to Four CATEGORIES (purchase additional categories for $2 each per month)

Choose up to five categories that best represent your business. (Click "Add" next to the categories you choose.)  You can make changes to this later. Click the "Continue" button to move to Step 4.

3. By submitting this page, you are Accepting the SLOWFLOWERS.COM Service "Pledge."

For both listings, continue to Step 4:

4. Now it's time to set up your account and billing information. PAYMENT METHOD: Choose Credit Card or PayPal. Click CONTINUE.

5. Set up User Name/Password. Be sure to click the box agreeing with "Terms of Use."

6. Check Out: Please complete your billing address and information required in other fields. Then click "Place Order and Continue."

What are my options for Payment Method?

You can pay by credit card or by PayPal. Please note that because your Slowflowers.com listing is like a subscription, PayPal will treat this as a 'recurring payment' so that your next payment can be made automatically.  If you don't want this option, you should be able to cancel or delete the recurring payment option.

OK, I've handled my payment.  Now what?

7.  You will be directed to the page where you will create your LISTING INFORMATION.

NOTE:  We strongly suggest writing your descriptive text in your word processing program and pasting it in, just in case of computer error.

For a STANDARD Listing, please follow these instructions:

Your Listing Title is your business name.

What goes in the email and URL fields?

After confirming your Business Name (in the Title Field), enter your Email, URL, Phone, Address and Key Words.

  • Use the email address where you would like to receive floral inquiries.

[Note: Our site uses special Javascript coding to protect your email address from spammers, so even though it is visible to readers, the "spambot" automated systems that harvest email addresses from websites will not be able to find it.]

  • Add URLs for your business web site and/or your blog.

Why do I need to put in a Location?

The Location fields are very important for consumers searching for flowers in their area. If you don’t want to post your street address or PO Box, that’s OK. But we strongly recommend that you include your city, state, and zip code, because people will be searching for flowers by zip code. Zip code is particularly important—our search options rely on zip code data.

What are Key Words?

Click here for smart tips on creating effective KEY WORDS. You may use up to 10 keywords that best describe your areas of expertise as people might search for them. Think about this from the perspective of the person doing the searching. Some examples might include: Green Weddings, DIY Workshops, Recycled Vase Rental Program, etc.

Add only one keyword or phrase per line; then hit "return."

At the bottom of this page, click SUBMIT

Now you will arrive at the MANAGE LISTINGS Page. You will see the status marked PENDING until Slowflowers.com approves your listing.

1. Click on the "pencil" icon in the right column called OPTIONS to make any additional edits.

2. Click on the "magnifying glass" icon in the OPTIONS column to view your listing.

3. You'll be taken to a page that looks like this. Select "Click here to preview this listing."

When you are finished, log out. Your listing will be approved within 24 hours. If you do not receive a notice in that time period, please check the SPAM folder of your inbox first; then, contact us at admin@slowflowers.com for help.

For a PREMIUM Listing, please follow these instructions:

After confirming your Business Name (in the Listing Title Field), enter your Email, URL, Phone, Fax and Address.

UPLOAD Images.

These are the images (your logo and up to 5 additional photos) that will show up on your Slowflowers.com Premium Listing page.  Note: Images should be small/web-friendly, not to exceed 800px x 600px, JPG, GIF or PNG).

You can feature a maximum of 5 images in the gallery, plus one main image. Please make sure the FIRST image you upload is your business logo. If you don't have a logo, that's okay; but the first image will appear at the top of your listing within the "About" text, so make sure it's a great representation of you or your company. This image will also appear in "Search" results. The image/logo will be cropped to a horizontal format when it appears in searches, but in the body of your listing it will display with normal proportions.

Add up to five more images, of your floral design, wedding and event work, or your flower farm. Please use only images that depict domestic or locally-grown product so as not to confuse the customer. Don't forget to add a brief caption in the "Caption" field. Images #2 to #6 will appear in the gallery.

What is Video Snippet Code (optional)?

If you have a video on YouTube, Vimeo, or another video site, you can go to the site and copy the “embed” code – a snippet of HTML code that allows you to put a video on another website.  Just copy that code and paste it directly into this field.

Hint:  Maximum video code size supported is 240px x 135px. If the video code size is bigger than the supported video size, it will be modified. Be sure to only include portion of the "embed" code within and including the "iframe" tags.

What goes in the Summary Description?

Just put a short company description here, ideally your tag line or slogan that sums up your business philosophy like "The Conscious Choice for Buying and Sending Flowers."

This must be 250 characters or less, including punctuation and spaces. Just a single sentence will work!

What goes in the Description?

This is where you put your full company description. Describe who you are and what you do. Describe your design style and area of expertise--whatever you want people to know about you when they're searching for flowers.

Notice there is a toolbar at the top so that you can format the text, changing the font size, making certain words bold and adding links. This is also a great place to add "testimonials" from satisfied customers!

Hey, some of the formatting looks weird!  What's up with that?

To put spaces between paragraphs: if entering text directly on SlowFlowers.com, press the return/enter key once between paragraphs. Space will automatically be generated between paragraphs. If you are pasting in from a word processing program, often the paragraph breaks will be converted to two linebreaks. If you backspace to remove the linebreaks and then re-enter a single return, you will re-establish the correct paragraph spacing

If you write your text in a word processing program you should paste it into this field by clicking on the "Paste from Word" icon. Click the "W" icon on the top-center section of the toolbar and the input field will pop up. Paste your text into this field and click "Insert." Failing to use "Paste from Word" can result in unexpected formatting being carried over from Word.

TIP:  Update the description section often with new information about yourself.  Regular updates help keep the site fresh and attract new visitors to the site.

What do I put in Key Words?

You may use up to 10 keywords that best describe your areas of expertise as people might search for them. Think about this from the perspective of the person doing the searching. Some examples might include: Green Weddings, DIY Workshops, Recycled Vase Rental Program, etc.

Add only one keyword or phrase per line; then hit "return."

Hours of work:

This is optional and of course, applies especially to retail outlets, flower shops and supermarkets.

Listing Categories:

Verify that the Listing Categories are the ones that apply to your business. You can select up to Two CATEGORIES with a STANDARD LISTING and up to Four Categories with a PREMIUM LISTING (purchase additional categories for $2 each per month). Click "Add" to the right of each category you wish to include.

What is a Promotional Code?

A promotional code is a discount code that gives a free or reduced-price listing. We very rarely use this feature. If you don’t have a promotional code, don’t worry—just leave it blank.

At the bottom of this page, enter SUBMIT

How do I update or make changes to my listing?

Go to http://slowflowers.com/profile/login.php  any time you want to sign in to your account.  Or click on the home page's "Sign In" button. That will take you to the dashboard where you will see the "Sign In" fields on the left of the page and the username and password you created.

On the Dashboard you will see "Manage" in the Member Options section of the sidebar to edit your listing.  Click the icon that looks like a pencil to make edits.

We strongly recommend that you have a copy of your edits in case of computer problems in the middle of the editing process.  Be sure to hit Submit at the very bottom of the page to save all your changes!

What happens after I’ve made changes to my listing?

Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. Your changes should go live right away.

How do I create a link to my Premium Listing?

Once your listing is live, you should be able to do a search for your company name and click on your listing to get a URL that goes straight to you.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)

I keep seeing the term SEO and little red arrows.  What's that about?

You can add keywords and other information to your listing to help search engines better find your page.  Just log into your account to manage your listings.  Click "Manage," then click on the little red arrow pointing up to see your SEO options.

What is SEO Description?

If someone does a search and your listing turns up, this is the text that appears just below the link to your name.  Write a short description of you that includes plenty of good keywords.  For example, "Linda Smith is a Boston-based floral designer and the author of Fabulous Flowers. She travels the country sharing her inspiring designs at flower shows, garden clubs, and botanical gardens. Her designs have been featured at more than 1,000 weddings in the past 12 years. Linda's aesthetic style features seasonal and locally-grown New England floral ingredients whenever available."

What are SEO Keywords?

These are keywords that people might use to find your listing when they do a search engine search. Try to think about the terms people might be using in their searches,  and use those as your SEO keywords.  Include your name, your business name, your tagline, the types of designs and services you offer, specialties like terrarium design or field-grown dahlias, as well as terms like "slowflowers, field-to-vase, eco-design" as well as "wedding flowers, special event design, DIY workshops," along with terms like "garden roses, specialty bulbs, native plants," etc.  Whatever best represents you.  Put a comma between each term (and don't use quotation or other punctuation.)
