A. Slowflowers.com is a free, searchable database that makes it easy for customers to find florists, shops, studios and farms who share their values and ethos about sourcing local, seasonal and domestic flowers.

Q. What is your Mission Statement?

A. The mission of Slowflowers.com is to inspire the floral industry and its consumers to embrace local, seasonal and sustainable flowers. It is our goal to make it easy for flower consumers to connect with florists, shops, studios and farms who provide domestic and locally-grown flowers, and to encourage truthful and transparent country-of-origin labeling in the floral industry.

Q. What inspired Debra Prinzing to develop Slowflowers.com?

A. It started with a simple bouquet of beautiful flowers that I gathered from my own backyard, wrapped with a satin ribbon and brought to a friend for her birthday. At that same birthday party, someone else showed up with a tired, ordinary bunch of flowers, swathed in clear cellophane, from the supermarket. It was clear which bouquet was fresher, more lovely, and more personal. The local bouquet had a story to tell because its recipient knew me and knew that those flowers were grown by me, nearby, just blocks away. The anonymous flowers didn't stand a chance. That realization -- that most people do not know where the flowers they buy are grown -- prompted me to launch Slowflowers.com as the nationwide online directory to florists, shops, studios and farms who source and design with deomestic and locally-grown flowers. The birthday party flowers wasn't my only inspiration for creating Slowflowers.com. Over the past several years, while doing media interviews and speaking to audiences about domestic and locally-grown flowers, I continually hear these questions: "Where can I find local flowers?" and "How can I find florists who I trust will sell me locally-grown flowers in their designs?" It became clear to me that when given a choice, people want locally-grown, domestic flowers. But it isn't always easy to find domestic flowers amidst the sea of unlabeled imported ones. It's also hard to discover those very special, dedicated designers committed to using flowers from their local farmers or event flowers grown nearby, during the off season. I was inspired to launch the SLOW FLOWERS online directory as a one-stop resource for consumers in search of florists who guarantee the origin of the flowers they use. It's simple. When you contact a florist, flower shop or designer on SLOW FLOWERS, they make a commitment to you, the flower consumer, that their flowers are truly homegrown. You should be able to know the origins of the flowers you order for a loved one. You should be assured that the bouquet you carry down the aisle was grown by a local flower farmer. You should know that jobs are being created and nurtured in your community through your floral purchases.
